Back in 2013, I was living in England, and life was good, but I couldn't shake the feeling that there might be something more out there for me. You know those deep chats you have with friends? Well, during one of those, a friend suggested I take my serviced apartment company abroad. It was like a lightbulb went off in my head—why not start a hospitality business for fun-loving travelers instead of business folks? YES!!! But then came the big question... where to?
... so when I started thinking about where to take my hospitality dream, Cambodia jumped out as the perfect choice. I'd been there before, loved the people, and it was affordable. Plus, running a business seemed way easier without the hassle of visa restrictions or needing a local majority shareholder (no thanks!). When I told my not-so-traditional dad, Brian, about my plan to move to Cambodia and open a hotel, he was all in and wanted to join the adventure too!
... and Kampot stole our hearts. We stumbled upon a stunning piece of land and couldn't resist putting a deposit down right then and there. Just three months later, it was ours! In May 2014, we landed in Cambodia with three cats in tow, while all our worldly possessions were sailing over in a shipping container. It was the hottest month of the year, and as we sat there, drenched in sweat, we couldn't help but think, 'OMG, what have we done!'
... we slowly started getting used to the heat. Thankfully, the rainy season came to our rescue! We opened our bar and restaurant on August 3rd, 2014, and by October, we had six bungalows ready to welcome guests. It was basic, rustic, but oh-so-beautiful, and we absolutely loved it! I later learned that many of the expats around at the time thought we were completely bonkers because it seemed so far from town back then. But guess what? It turned out to be the best decision we ever made!
...we've transformed from a cozy 6-bungalow mini resort into a 20-room haven with a spa complex. It's been a journey filled with fun, laughter, and a fair share of challenges—especially during the COVID times—but we managed to keep our doors open throughout! Along the way, we've made lifelong friends in this incredible community that has blossomed around us. We've built something we truly love and are immensely proud of!
It's one of our greatest achievements and a place I hold dear, but after over a decade of building this dream, it's almost time for someone else to see what they can create here while we embark on our next adventure. (Don't worry, I'm not leaving Cambodia—this is home now, just ready for a change!) For some reason, I've always believed that someone would walk into Bohemiaz, fall in love with it just as I have, and want to take it on. I'm sharing this partly because people always ask about my story, but also to let that special person or guest know we are ready!
...or even about moving to Cambodia at any time, just come and visit us and say hi, I’m happy to pass on what I know to those thinking about a change. It was the best decision of my life to date!
